Ship Impact on Structures
Introduction
On numerous occasions ships have collided with bridges, offshore structures
etc. Examples are the Tjörn bridge (Sweden), the West Bridge of the Great
Belt Link (Denmark) and the Maracaibo bridge (Venezuela).
ES-Consult has developed a software collection to model a collision
between a ship and an off-shore structure.
The software provides a sophisticated numerical analysis of the event
of a ship collision with a structure. The results are obtained in terms
of member forces, displacements and accelerations.
The results are presented in plots and tables which make interpretation
and understanding easy. The results give answers to questions like: What
will the permanent deformation of the foundation be? Will the bearings
fail? Can a more economical foundation design be chosen?
Analysis
The analysis that ES-Consult can provide, ncludes modelling of the bridge
structure, the foundation and the ship structure. Reliable answers are
obtained by a combination of finite elements techniques with optimization
algorithms and numerical integration techniques.
The models may contain any relevant mechanisms entering a problem. Standard
features are non-linear modelling of the foundation, the bearings and ship
structure. However, the software is flexibly designed so that new features
can be incorporated when needed.
Experiences
The analysis is executed by highly skilled engineers with large experience
in dynamics and structural engineering in general.
The interpretation of the results and the reporting is based on many
years' experience. ES-Consult has specialized in communicating complex
issues in easily understandable reports which can be of direct use to the
client.
ES-Consult's experience and knowledge have been applied in connection
with the Øresund Link Project, the major bridge project between
Sweden and Denmark.
